He died of asphyxiation as a result of a white police officer kneeling on his neck for nearly nine minutes while other officers pinned him to the ground. GeorgeFloyd’s death sparked weeks of global protests against anti-Black racism and police brutality. George Floyd is not the end of the story, it’s just the beginning. Thousands of demonstrators streamed into the nation’s capital on Saturday, June 6th, in the largest local protests so far over police brutality and racial oppression in the United States. On a hot and humid day, people carrying protest signs marched, many with their children, toward the area around the besieged White House, where authorities used tan military Humvees and dump trucks to cordon off large sections to vehicle traffic. “You know we have to speak up loudly for more justice and more peace!” Mayor Muriel Bowser called out to the crowd.
